Block Grant Awards Announced at OJJDP's National EUDL Leadership Conference

OJJDP Administrator J. Robert FloresOJJDP Administrator J. Robert Flores addressed a press conference on the opening day of the 10 th annual National Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Leadership Conference, which is being held August 21-23 in Nashville, TN. Mr. Flores cited the considerable costs of underage drinking in terms of dollars and lives and added that the social, psychological, and emotional costs are “virtually incalculable.” He announced that OJJDP has awarded more than $19 million dollars in block grants in fiscal year 2008 to enforce underage drinking laws.

Bulletin Examines Transfer of Juveniles to Criminal Courts
OJJDP announces the availability of “Juvenile Transfer Laws: An Effective Deterrent to Delinquency?” In an effort to strengthen sanctions for serious juvenile crimes, most states enacted laws expanding the types of offenders and offenses eligible for transfer from juvenile courts to adult criminal courts. This bulletin provides an overview of research examining the deterrent effects of such transfers, focusing on OJJDP-funded studies. The information it provides should help inform policy decisions.More icon
